How do the Harper and Levi Identities Constrain Belief Change?
نویسنده
چکیده
Belief revision is the process of revising beliefs in light of new information. Belief contraction is the process of giving up beliefs to make them consistent with new information. The Levi and Harper Identities provide constructions of revisions and contractions in terms of each other. This paper gives necessary and sufficient conditions for when revisions can be constructed from contractions, and contractions from revisions. I relate these conditions to other well-known principles for belief revision and contraction. 1 Minimal Belief Change and the Levi and Harper

Thomas Meyer Belief Liberation ( and Retraction )
We provide a formal study of belief retraction operators that do not necessarily satisfy the (Inclusion) postulate. Our intuition is that a rational description of belief change must do justice to cases in which dropping a belief can lead to the inclusion, or ‘liberation’, of others in an agent’s corpus. We provide two models of liberation via retraction operators: σ-liberation and linear liber...
متن کاملContraction in Propositional Logic
The AGM model for the revision and contraction of belief sets provides rationality postulates for each of the two cases. In the context of finite propositional logic, Katsuno and Mendelzon pointed out postulates for the revision of belief bases which correspond to the AGM postulates for the revision of beliefs sets. In this paper, we present postulates for the contraction of propositional belie...
متن کاملInter-Definability of Horn Contraction and Horn Revision
There have been a number of publications in recent years on generalising the AGM paradigm to the Horn fragment of propositional logic. Most of them focused on adapting AGM contraction and revision to the Horn setting. It remains an open question whether the adapted Horn contraction and Horn revision are interdefinable as in the AGM case through the Levi and Harper identities. In this paper, we ...

متن کاملMinimal belief change, Pareto-optimality and logical consequence
A rational agent changes her beliefs in response to new information; a widely held idea is that such belief changes should be minimal. This paper is an overview of the theory of minimal belief revision. I employ a decisiontheoretic framework to compare various principles for minimal belief revision. The main topics covered include the AGM postulates for belief revision, belief contraction, Grov...
